Own warehouse or Fulfillment?
In the e-commerce business and logistics, two points of view on warehouse and shipping solutions for e-shops have recently come together.
While one side is pushing hard for its own background and therefore its own warehouse, own employees, labels, shipping, reverse logistics and returns, the other one is exactly going in the opposite direction.
I’m sure it’s already a cliché, but each side has its advantages and disadvantages.
However, I see only one winner.
It should come as no surprise that small eshops in particular are clamoring for an external warehouse along with the other benefits associated with it. And they certainly have it triple-counted.
In their cost spreadsheet, there is time saving in addition to saved rent, wages, software, nerves.
And that’s what’s starting to be a very interesting commodity these days.
However, when choosing your own warehouse, you also have to think about its logistical/strategic location.
That is to say, if you choose your own warehouse somewhere out of town, it opens up a big can of HR problems.
Nowadays, youngsters are saving their time.
They can save the latter especially on commuting to work.
After this preface, I can understand that maybe someone will close the door on their own warehouse solution. But, there is one big BUT. However, having everything in your own hands has its advantages.
More than not having.
For example, in cost optimization.
Or in sharing warehouse space in the context of cost savings.
More on that later :)
But most of all you can save time!
with the right warehouse flow setup, you can ship much longer than with an external warehouse.
This way you can sell more in one day.
You can resolve your complaints faster, which leads to repeat purchases and returning customers.
Not to forget having your own carrier.
This is where we go live.
Having your own carrier, and now it doesn’t matter if commercial, standard, first mile, last mile, puts new cards in your hands.
Having the ability to enter into communication and directly address fees, questions, collection time and delivery time should be a priority for any eshop.
Because today there is a big difference between D+1, D+2 and D+3 delivery.
At the end of the day, I always say that sometimes there is no need to invent hot water.
Just look at how the best or the most successful ones do it.
Whether it’s Alza, Gym Beam, Notino, or others. They will confirm to you that time has long been a very valuable commodity.
